Amanda McConnell is the writer and creative producer of The Sacred Balace. The four-part television series is based on the book of the same name (Greystone Books, Vancouver, 1997) she co-authored with Dr. David Suzuki. Amanda McConnell has written more than 100 documentary films. Many of them she also researched, produced, co-produced and directed. They cover a wide range of subjects in science, natural history, medicine, technology, history, biography and the environment, including five of the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s two-hour special presentations on science and social issues. For many years she was a senior writer for CBC’s The Nature of Things, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation’s premier science documentary series. In the course of her career she has worked with many of North America’s most eminent scientists. She has also written for Canada’s National Film Board, for National Geographic Explorer, PBS Nature, the United Nations, and for many independent producers here and in the United States. Her writing credits include Life In The Balance, an Imax film on biodiversity narrated by Harrison Ford; The Ordeal of Leiliana Muir, Baboon Tales; Yellowstone to Yukon; Food or Famine (also director/associate producer); Trading Futures (also associate producer); Those Magnificent Diving Machines; A Climate for Change; Dealing with Drugs (also researcher/co-producer); After the Fire (also director/co-producer); Amazonia: The Road to the End of the Forest (also researcher/associate producer); Arctic Refuge; Small Rivers; Serving Time (also associate producer); The Knowing Nose (also researcher); and Fragile Harvest. Films she has written have received awards at the American Film Festival, the Columbus Film Festival, the Yorkton Short Film and Video Festival, the Banff Film Festival, the Birmingham International Educational Film Festival, among many others, and at major festivals in Europe. Amanda has won the Science Writers Award, the Lillian Gish Woman In Film Award, and has been an ACTRA Award nominee and a three-time Gemini Award nominee. She has a Ph.D. in English Literature. Her latest book, also co-authored with David Suzuki, is The Sacred Balance: A Visual Celebration of Our Place in Nature, to be published by Greystone Books in October 2002.
